Reefer Truck vs Freezer Truck: What’s the Difference?

If you have shipped chilled or frozen goods before, you have probably seen the terms “reefer truck” and “freezer truck” used almost interchangeably. They are related, but they are not quite the same thing — and knowing the difference helps you ask for the right vehicle.

What is a reefer truck? “Reefer” is short for refrigerated. A reefer truck has an insulated body and its own refrigeration unit, so the temperature inside is actively controlled — not just kept cool by insulation. The key feature is that the temperature can be set and held, which means the same vehicle can run chilled or frozen loads depending on what you need.

What is a freezer truck? “Freezer truck” usually describes a refrigerated truck being run at freezing temperatures — for frozen goods like ice cream, frozen seafood or frozen meat. In practice, a freezer truck is a reefer truck set to a frozen range. The body and the refrigeration unit are doing the same job; the difference is the temperature it is holding.

So which one do you need? It comes down to your product, not the label:

  • Chilled goods — fresh produce, dairy, chilled meat — need a reefer held at a chilled temperature.
  • Frozen goods — frozen food, ice cream, frozen seafood — need a reefer held at a frozen temperature (what people call a “freezer truck”).

What matters is not the name on the vehicle, but whether the refrigeration can hold the temperature your product needs, for the whole trip, without a warm gap.

Blue Box runs its own refrigerated fleet and carries both chilled and frozen goods across Peninsular Malaysia and into Singapore, with the temperature held for the entire journey.
